Installing a Level 2 EV Charger in an Older Boston-Area Home

Almost every EV charger quote comes down to three questions, and none of them are about the charger itself.

The first is capacity. A Level 2 charger is a continuous load, typically on a 40- or 50-amp circuit, and continuous loads are calculated at 125 percent. That's a meaningful share of a 100-amp service that's already feeding a kitchen, heating, and everything else. We run the load calculation before quoting, because finding out on installation day that the service can't carry it is the worst possible time. If the calculation is tight, the honest options are a service upgrade or a charger with load management that throttles when the house is drawing hard, and we'll price both.

The second is the route. The distance from your panel to where the car parks decides most of the labor. A panel in the basement directly below an attached garage is a short, clean run. A panel on the opposite end of the house from a detached garage means a longer run, possibly a trench and a subpanel, and a very different number. Walk that route in your head before you assume a flat rate applies to you.

The third is the permit. EV charger installations are permitted electrical work in Massachusetts, and they get inspected. That's a feature: it means the circuit was sized correctly, the conductors are protected, and the GFCI protection required for the installation is actually there. Any quote that skips the permit is quietly transferring risk to you, and it can surface awkwardly at resale.

A few practical notes. Hardwired installations are generally preferable to plug-in for a permanent home charger. If you have any interest in a second vehicle later, running conduit sized for it now is far cheaper than opening the same wall twice. And check your utility's off-peak charging rates before choosing hardware, because scheduling capability that saves money every night is worth more than a slightly higher peak rate.

Tesla Wall Connectors, and every other major brand, install the same way from our side: correct circuit, correct conduit, correct GFCI protection, permit filed, inspection closed out.
